Bird-and-flower painting is a significant genre in traditional Chinese art, depicting flowers, trees, birds, and insects to convey vitality and poetic charm. This art form flourished during the Tang dynasty and reached its peak in the Song dynasty, where gongbi (meticulous brushwork) emphasised fine details and rich colours. During the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, expressive xieyi (freehand) techniques became dominant, using fluid brushstrokes to evoke deeper artistic meaning.

Bird-and-flower paintings often carry auspicious symbolism, such as plum blossoms and cranes representing purity and longevity, or peonies and peacocks symbolising wealth and prosperity. Techniques vary from fine-line gongbi, expressive ink washes, to colour-on-silk compositions. In ancient times, scholars used this genre to express emotions and often incorporated poetry and calligraphy to enrich its artistic depth.
