Common fan shapes include circular, semi-circular, and oval, with compositions that require careful arrangement and refined brushwork.

The themes of fan paintings are diverse, covering landscapes, flowers and birds, elegant ladies, insects, and poetic calligraphy. Techniques range from meticulous gongbi, expressive ink painting, to colour-on-silk, with some works embellished with gold foil, silver foil, or gilded details, enhancing their opulent appeal.

Historically, scholars and literati used fan paintings to express emotions, poetic sentiments, or philosophical ideals, often presenting them as refined gifts. In imperial courts, skilled artists created fan paintings featuring ladies, auspicious motifs, and intricate patterns, symbolising status and prosperity.
